Don't like pink?

This is a book cover for Mediascapes, 3rd edition, edited by Leslie Regan Shade. This is the design Nelson Publishing chose over the first--and in my opinion, more striking--of the two designs. My hunch is that the first design, while much stronger conceptually and more visually appealing, wasn't retained because of the colour pink. Pink is loaded and for that it remains a hard sell. I think there will forever be an association in our hemisphere between pink and femininity, and this, it would seem, doesn't match up well to a book about media. I'm speculating, obviously, but I think no matter the truth, colour connotes and sometimes threatens.
